Install SSD in PC: Step by step explains!

Table of Contents

Install SSD: Preparation This is how the SSD installation goes step by step SSD: The benefits What do with the old hard drive?

Who installs Windows and programs on an SSD, notices the difference soon at the start: When he had to get along with his conventional hard drive, the computer's image test PC was only 32 seconds start-clear — with an SSD on board it took just 14 Seconds. But while most current desktop PCs as well as numerous notebooks combine a small but fast SSD with a rather slow but big hard drive, the SSD Turbo is missing in many older models. Luckily he can be retrofitted, and they do not have to pay 100 euros for that. You do not have a PC and use a laptop? No problem: How the installation works in the notebook, read in the guide Install SSD in the notebook.

Complete list: The best SSDs (2.5 inches, Solid State Drives)

Build SSD: The preparation

The installation is not a problem in most PCs — anyway, you should check your computer on three points before buying an SSD.

Power supply: The power supply must have a connection for the power supply of the SSD on board.

Main board connection: If you want to install a 2.5-inch SSD, the PC needs a SATA connection. But do not worry, that's standard for ten-year-old computers. If a chewing gum tire sized SSD makes the PC legs, he needs an m.2 slot. This connection does not exist in computers that are older than three years.

Slot: A 2.5-inch SSD requires a suitable slot. In some cases, a frame must ensure a secure hold.

The Windows Reinstallation: Re-setting the operating system is unnecessary by transferring the data of the old mass storage to the new. For this you need a USB housing — or you build for cloning the new memory in addition to the old one, if possible. For example, the Minitool Partition Wizard is suitable for example — a freeware partitioned with HDD SSD migration. The process is not limited to drive models of certain manufacturers. If Windows and personnel files are transferred (or you want to reinstall Windows new), stands the installation of the new memory.

So the SSD installation goes

Anyone who has become accustomed to the pace of an SSD would never give up anymore. Computer image explains the installation in a 2.5-inch slot in a few steps. Before opening the PC case, remotely pull the power cord out of the tin. For most PCs, then remove the screws on the housing and take the sidewall off. Insert the PC with the open side up to the table and search for the SATA and the power connection, to which five cable veins lead. On the other hand, only one visible ribbon cable leads to the SATA connection. Orient yourself to the already built-in hard drive if you do not find the connections immediately. For installation in a hard disk holder, you usually need a frame that fixes the SSD safely in the computer. For some SSDs he is part of the scope of delivery, individually he costs only a few euros. Some PCs also have a holder for 2.5-inch SSDs under the shaft with the DVD drive — the installation also works without frame. If power and data cables are tuned, you can move your programs, for example with PC-trans. Afterwards, then install Windows on the SSD, change the boot order in the BIOS so that the PC will start from the SSD in the future.

SSD: The benefits

How big is the temporal part of an SSD, you already notice when booting. Background: Important for a quick start of Windows and programs is the highest possible number of read and readings (IOPS). Here, for example, the Crucial MX500 managed up to 99,854 IOPS per second. Conventional hard drives, however, create only a few hundred IOPS. After the starting time shortened by just half the Test PC did the usual internet and office jobs with a double pace. Particularly large was the Tempos chub in data transfers, both in reading and writing. The pace profit in photo and video editing acts as comparatively modest. Because such programs need a lot of memory, only a RAM retrofitting brings more speed. Besides high tempo, SSDs offer even more advantageous features:

Quiet: Because they have no mechanical components, SSDs work completely noiseless.

Robust: On top of that SSDs are more robust as hard drives with their fast and reciprocating writing and read head.

Lightweight and economical: SSDs are easier and require less energy, but especially notebooks benefit.

What to do with the old hard drive?

Using a USB housing or USB adapter for SATA hard disks use the removed memory. You connect the removed plate with the plug cable and then operate the device similar to an external hard drive — such a build almost itself. Without further Windows, however, is not usable on it. If your SSD new purchase does not bring a USB housing, you can buy one for about 10 euros on the Internet.
